Why Sportly AI gives no result prediction for friendlies

International and club friendlies look like normal football, but for a prediction model they are a different kind of data. That is why on friendly match pages Sportly AI shows a total-goals call but no result prediction.

What makes a friendly unpredictable

Line-ups. Coaches use friendlies to test new signings and fringe players. The first team may play 45 minutes or not at all, and more substitutions are allowed than in competitive games. The model relies on team strength, and in a friendly the side on the pitch is often a different team.

Motivation. In a competitive match there are points, qualification or a trophy at stake. In a friendly it is preparation. The favourite can play at half pace while testing a system, so the result stops reflecting the real gap in quality.

Little comparable history. Teams meet in friendlies rarely and in very different conditions: pre-season, neutral venues, heat. Historical data transfers poorly to the specific game.

Why we still show the total

Total goals depend less on who wins. An open game with experimental line-ups and many changes often produces goals, while a cautious tactical test does the opposite. The model picks these patterns up from team style, so the total-goals call stays and is counted in our total-goals accuracy.

How this affects accuracy

Friendlies are excluded from result and double-chance accuracy, because we do not publish those predictions for them. For totals they count like any other match.

Bottom line

If a match page says "Friendly match: line-ups and motivation are unpredictable", that is a deliberate rule, not a bug. The full match breakdown is available in our Telegram app.
